School Fees in Rawalpindi: The Questions Nobody Asks Until August
Monthly fee is only the opening number. A plain-language guide to the real cost of a school year in Pakistan — and the questions to ask before admission, not after.
There's a conversation that happens in thousands of Rawalpindi homes every August. It starts with an envelope from the school and ends with someone saying "yeh to admission ke waqt kisi ne nahi bataya tha."
Nobody told us this at admission time.
We're a school, so read this knowing where it comes from — but that's also exactly why we can tell you how the fee structure game is played. Here's what to ask any school, including ours, before you pay the admission fee.
The six numbers that make up a school year
- Admission fee — one-time, usually non-refundable. Ask: if my child leaves after one month, what happens?
- Security deposit — should be refundable. Ask for that in writing on the receipt itself.
- Monthly tuition — the number on the banner. The least interesting number on this list.
- Annual charges — the August surprise. Paper fund, exam fee, "development charges", diary fee. Ask for every single one, with amounts, before admission.
- Books and uniform — ask whether you're free to buy from the bazaar or forced to buy from the school at the school's price. There's often a 30–40% difference.
- The increase — fees go up. Ask by how much they went up last year. That's your best guess for next year.
Add all six for a full year. Divide by twelve. That's the real monthly fee. Compare schools on that number and the rankings change quite a bit.
Questions that get revealing answers
"Can I have the full fee structure on paper?" — A school that hesitates to write its own prices down is telling you something.
"What happens if I pay on the 15th instead of the 5th?" — You want to know the late fine now, not during a tough month. Life happens; salaries get delayed.
"Is there a sibling discount?" — Many schools quietly give 10–25% for the second child, but only if you ask. Ask.
"What is NOT covered?" — Trips, farewell functions, sports day costumes. Small amounts, but they arrive without warning and always in cash.
A word about very cheap schools
A school charging half the going rate is saving that money somewhere — usually the teacher's salary. An underpaid teacher is job-hunting during your child's class time. Cheap can be expensive.
And about very expensive ones
Past a certain point you're paying for marble, marketing, and the brand on the blazer. Marble doesn't teach. Some of the best-taught children in this city are in modest buildings; some of the worst-taught are in beautiful ones.
Our own policy, since you'll ask
We share our full fee structure at the school or on WhatsApp — every component, written down, before admission. We'd rather lose a family at the fee stage than surprise them in August. It's a small school; our reputation walks around the mohalla on foot.
