Why Your Child Struggles With Math — And How to Actually Help
Math difficulty in primary school usually has a specific cause. Once you find which one, the fix becomes obvious. Here is how to look properly.
A parent in Rawalpindi comes home tired. The child is in tears at the dining table. The math homework has been sitting open for an hour. The same Class 3 problem on borrowing in subtraction has been done three times, three different ways, all wrong. Both parent and child want to give up.
This scene happens in thousands of Pakistani homes weekly. What it looks like is a child who is "bad at math." What it actually is, almost always, is a child who has missed a specific earlier step and is trying to do the current step without it.
Math difficulty is not usually about general intelligence. It is about gaps. And gaps are findable, and fixable.
How math actually builds
Math is one of the most strictly sequential subjects. Every new concept depends on the previous one. A child who has not really mastered counting cannot really do addition. A child who has not really mastered addition cannot really do multiplication. A child who has not really mastered multiplication cannot really do division.
When a child struggles in Class 3, the problem is rarely in Class 3 work. The problem is in Class 1 or 2 work that was never properly mastered. The Class 3 work simply made the gap visible.
This is why repeating the same homework problem with the child does not help. They are missing a step from earlier. Until that step is filled, the current work will keep failing.
The most common gaps
In our experience working with Pakistani primary children, certain specific gaps appear again and again. Find the one your child has, and you have found half the answer.
Number sense. The intuitive feel for what numbers actually represent. A child with strong number sense can look at a group of 12 objects and roughly estimate it before counting. A child without it treats numbers as abstract symbols. This gap is the single most common cause of Class 2 to 4 math struggle.
Place value. What the digits in 247 actually mean. A child who reads 247 as "two-four-seven" but does not see two hundreds, four tens, and seven ones cannot really borrow or carry. They are doing magic, not math.
Times tables. Specifically the actual memorisation. A child who does not have multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 automatic by Class 3 will struggle through everything that follows.
Fractions as parts of things. Many Pakistani children learn fraction symbols (1/2, 3/4) without ever physically dividing a roti or a cake. The symbols mean nothing concrete to them.
Word problems. Children who can do 24 - 17 on paper often cannot do the same calculation when it is presented as a story. The gap is reading comprehension applied to math.
Math vocabulary. "Sum," "difference," "product," "quotient," "altogether," "left over." Children who do not know what these words mean cannot follow instructions.
How to diagnose
A simple diagnostic conversation, away from the homework, takes about ten minutes.
Sit with your child. Use real objects — coins, almonds, small stones.
- Count out 7 objects. Then 5 more. How many total? Watch how they do this. Do they count from one? Or count on from seven?
- Show 23. Ask, how many tens. How many ones. Then ask, what would 23 plus 10 be? Watch whether they really know what tens are.
- Multiplication. Ask quickly: 4 times 6. 7 times 8. 9 times 7. How fast and how confident?
- Take a roti. Tear it in half. Now what is each piece? Half. Tear one half in half. Now what is each piece? Quarter. Most children at six or older should follow this.
- Pose a word problem. "If you have 8 sweets and give 3 to your sister, how many left?" Watch how they translate words into operations.
This is not formal testing. It is conversation. But it reveals the gap, almost always within a few minutes.
Fixing the gaps
Once you know the gap, the fix follows.
For weak number sense. Use physical objects. A lot of them. Counting beans, sorting stones, comparing piles. The first three years of Montessori-method math is essentially this — physical work with quantity, before symbols. If your child is in primary and still weak here, you have to circle back to physical objects, even if it feels embarrassing.
For weak place value. Use bundles of ten sticks held together by a rubber band. Bundle ten. Group ten bundles for a hundred. Physical place value teaches what worksheets cannot.
For weak times tables. Daily, brief practice. Five minutes a day. Use a chart, song, flashcards — whatever your child responds to. The goal is automaticity. No child should be "calculating" 7 x 8 in Class 4. They should just know.
For weak fractions. Cooking. Cutting fruit. Sharing rotis. Pouring water from one cup into two. Real fractions of real things. Then bridge to symbols.
For weak word problems. Slow them down. Have them read the problem aloud, twice. Underline what they are looking for. Underline what they know. Then choose an operation. Many children rush straight to calculation without understanding.
For weak math vocabulary. Build a small list of math words on a piece of paper in the child's room. Refer to it. Use the words yourself in normal conversation. Quiz lightly, occasionally.
What about math tutoring
Tutoring can help. Whether it does depends on whether the tutor diagnoses gaps, or just drills more problems at the current level.
A good math tutor will:
- Start with diagnosis, not just the current syllabus
- Go back to fill gaps, even if that means teaching Class 1 content to a Class 4 child
- Use physical objects and visual representations alongside symbols
- Build automaticity in foundational skills
- Praise progress, not just correct answers
A bad math tutor will:
- Push the child through the current syllabus regardless of gaps
- Drill problem after problem without understanding
- Make the child feel stupid

Math anxiety
A specific issue worth naming. Some children develop math anxiety — a real, physiological stress response when they encounter math problems. They freeze, panic, cry, or shut down. This is not laziness. It is a learned association between math and threat.
Math anxiety usually comes from:
- Repeated public humiliation (being wrong in front of the class)
- Parental tension during homework
- Time pressure (timed tests at too young an age)
- Comparisons with siblings or peers
The fix is slow but real. Reduce the emotional charge. Let the child experience easy math wins again. Praise effort, never compare. Build confidence on solid foundations, not bluffing through the syllabus.
The role of parental attitude
A surprising finding from educational research. Children pick up on parents' own math attitudes. A parent who says "I was never good at math" in front of the child often produces a child who is also not good at math. The expectation transfers.
Whatever your own math past, in front of your child, math is interesting and doable. Even if you have to fake it for a year, fake it. Look up the answer if needed. Show curiosity. Math is one of the subjects where parental attitude has measurable effects.
When the gap is too big
Sometimes a child has so many gaps that you cannot fill them at home. The child is in Class 5 but functioning at Class 2 math level. Continuing in the regular syllabus is causing increasing distress.
This is when you talk to the school. A good teacher can:
- Adjust expectations temporarily
- Provide differentiated work
- Recommend specific support, including possible assessment for dyscalculia (a specific math learning difficulty)

A simple short-term plan
If you want a practical four-week plan to start helping:
Week 1. Do the diagnostic conversation above. Identify the one or two biggest gaps.
Week 2. Pick one gap. Practise 15 minutes a day, with physical objects and games rather than worksheets. Stay calm. Build confidence.
Week 3. Continue the same gap. Add ten minutes of times-table practice if applicable.
Week 4. Continue. Start to bridge to the current school work. Notice whether the child is more confident.
Most parents who do this for a month see real changes. The child becomes less afraid, more willing to try. The fix is rarely fast, but it is reliable.
A short principle
Math is not a mystery. It is a sequence. When a child struggles, they have missed a step. The step is findable, and once filled, everything that follows becomes easier.
