The Hidden Cost of Rote Learning — And How to Move Past It

Memorisation has its place. But rote learning as a substitute for understanding leaves Pakistani children behind in ways that only show up later.

A common scene in many Pakistani primary classrooms. A Class 3 teacher asks, "How much is 7 times 8?" Half the class answers in unison, "56." A few seconds later, the teacher asks a different question: "If you have 7 baskets, each with 8 mangoes, how many mangoes total?" Long silence. Confused faces. A few children eventually try counting in their heads.

The children knew 7 times 8 by heart. They did not know what multiplication actually meant. This is rote learning. And it is one of the deepest, most quietly damaging features of Pakistani schooling.

This is not a criticism of memorisation. Some things are worth memorising — times tables, basic spelling, Quranic verses for those who study them, key dates. The problem is not memorisation. The problem is when memorisation replaces understanding.

What rote learning costs

A child who has been taught by rote can:

  • Recite definitions
  • Solve problems that look exactly like the example
  • Pass tests in the short term
  • Appear to know the subject

A child who has been taught by rote often cannot:

  • Apply concepts to slightly different problems
  • Explain why something works
  • Identify their own mistakes
  • Connect ideas across subjects
  • Remember the content past the exam
  • Solve real-world problems that require thinking

In primary school, the gap is small. In secondary school, it widens. In professional life, it becomes definitive. A surgeon, an engineer, a lawyer, a teacher — all need understanding, not just memorisation. The patterns of thinking built in primary school set the ceiling for the rest of life.

Why it persists

A few honest reasons rote learning continues in Pakistani schooling.

It is easier to teach. A teacher who lectures and asks children to memorise definitions can manage forty children. A teacher who walks each child through the concept needs more skill and smaller classes.

It produces visible short-term results. Children can recite. Parents see something. Tests are passed. The hidden cost is, by definition, hidden until later.

Exam patterns reinforce it. Many traditional exam questions ask for memorised content. The system rewards what the system tests.

Parents reinforce it. "Have you memorised that?" is the typical question. "Do you understand that?" is rarer.

Cultural habit. Generations of education in Pakistan and the broader subcontinent treated memorisation as the core of learning. Shifting the culture takes time.

None of this means individual teachers or parents are at fault. It means the system as a whole has drifted in a direction that does not serve children well, and individuals have to deliberately swim against the current.

What understanding actually looks like

A child who understands something can:

  • Explain it in their own words
  • Give an example that was not in the textbook
  • Recognise the same concept in different forms
  • Notice when they have made a mistake
  • Use the concept to solve a related but different problem

A child who has only memorised does these things weakly or not at all. The difference is observable in any subject.

How to check whether your child understands

A few quick conversations, away from homework, that reveal where understanding actually sits.

Math. Pose a word problem unrelated to the textbook. "If a pakora costs Rs 20 and you have Rs 100, how many can you buy?" Watch how they think.

Science. Ask about something they recently studied, in their own words. "What is photosynthesis?" Watch whether the answer is recited definition or actual explanation. Follow up: "So why do plants need sunlight?" Watch whether they can extend.

Social studies. Pick a small fact from a recent chapter. Ask why. "Why did the Indus Valley civilization develop near a river?" If they have only memorised, they will not be able to reason about it.

Language. Read a short paragraph together. Ask, in their own words, what is happening. Not what the textbook says — what the child thinks is happening.

Doing this once a week with different topics gives you a clear picture of where memorisation ends and understanding begins.

How to support understanding

A few practical practices.

Ask "why" and "how" alongside "what." "What is 5 plus 5?" is a memory question. "How would you make 10 with different numbers?" is an understanding question. Mix the two.

Use real objects and real situations. Math is easier to understand with actual coins, almonds, fruit. Science with real plants, real water, real cooking. Move from the concrete to the symbolic, in that order.

Encourage explanation. "Can you tell me how you got that answer?" not just "Is that right?" The act of explaining deepens understanding.

Tolerate slow. Understanding takes longer than memorisation in the short term. The trade-off is that what is understood stays. What is memorised often fades.

Connect to daily life. When you are cooking, talk about volumes. When you are shopping, talk about money and change. When you are walking, talk about distance and time. These small connections turn abstract content into useful thinking.

Read for pleasure, not just for tests. Children who read widely encounter concepts in many contexts. Their understanding deepens automatically.

What about memorisation that is genuinely useful

Some memorisation is appropriate. Specifically:

  • Multiplication tables up to 12 x 12
  • Basic spelling of common words
  • Key historical dates that anchor understanding
  • Names of geographical features and capitals
  • Times of day, months, days, seasons
  • Specific religious texts where chosen by the family

These benefit from being automatic. A child who has to calculate 7 times 8 every time slows down in everything else. A child who knows it instantly has freed cognitive space.

The principle: memorise the foundations that everything else builds on. Understand everything else.

A specific note on math

Math is where rote learning does the most damage. Many Pakistani children pass Class 4 math through pattern matching without ever understanding what numbers represent. By Class 7, when problems require flexibility, they cannot cope.

If you suspect your child is in this pattern, see why your child struggles with math. The fix is real — circling back to physical, conceptual foundations, even if it feels late.

A specific note on Islamiat and Quran

A sensitive topic worth treating carefully. Memorisation of Quranic verses is religiously valuable. Memorisation alongside understanding of meaning is more so.

A child who recites suras flawlessly but does not know what they mean has done the first half of the work. Encouraging the second half — gradual learning of meaning, age-appropriate discussion of context — produces deeper, more lasting connection to the text.

This is not a critique. It is an invitation to extend.

A specific note on languages

Vocabulary lists memorised without context tend to fade. The same words encountered in reading and conversation stick.

A child who memorises ten English words for Friday's test, gets nine right, and forgets them by Monday has not really learned. A child who reads a chapter of a story and encounters those words naturally is more likely to retain them.

How to find a school that values understanding

A few questions to ask when choosing a school.

  • Are the classes small enough for individual attention?
  • Do the teachers ask "why" and "how" or mostly "what"?
  • Are children encouraged to ask questions?
  • Are the textbooks supplemented with discussion and project work?
  • How are exams structured — pure recall, or some application?
  • Are children allowed to make mistakes, or are they shamed for them?

A school that scores well on these tends to produce children who understand. A school that does not tends to produce children who can recite.

A short principle

Memorisation without understanding is bricks without mortar. The wall looks solid until the first strong wind.

Spend the time on understanding. Memorise the foundations. Then watch your child build, year after year, on real ground.
